Cranberry Extract: a Safer, Natural and Effective Cure for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections affecting any part of your urinary system; urethra, bladder, ureters and/or kidneys. Symptoms may include painful burning during urination, excessive urge to urinate, feeling the urge to urinate while not be able to, leaking of urine, and bloody and/or cloudy urine. A sign of a more severe UTI is lower back pain, indicating that bacteria have spread to the kidneys. While urinary tract infections limited to your bladder can be painful and annoying, an infection that has spread to the kidneys may result in permanent kidney damage or failure if left untreated.

UTIs are treated by doctors with antibacterial drugs. The antibacterial chosen to combat the infection depend on the urine test identifying the offending bacteria. With these drugs a UTI can be cured within 1-2 days though doctors prescribe the medication for a week or two to ensure that the infection has cleared. However, while taking antibacterial medication is a good idea for UTI’s of the more severe form (especially if the kidneys are suspect), this type of treatment may not even be necessary, let alone within the best interest of your health. Antibacterial is known for its harmful effect on the human body, weakening the immune system by overtaking a job that’s meant to be natural. The human immune system requires constant stimulation to work properly and by using anti-bacterials and antibiotics you are taking away the only “exercise” that the immune system has to stay healthy. Also, bacteria become more resistant to antibiotics over time, requiring dosages to increase and making the body more and more dependent on these drugs.

Having been prone to UTIs at a young age, I know first hand the pain and nuisance they cause and more importantly the detrimental effects antibiotics used to treat these infections have on the body (not to mention the wallet). I found that the more I took antibiotics, the more frequently I would be inflicted with UTIs. Fortunately, there is a natural and more long-term treatment for UTIs: Cranberry Extract. Cranberry has natural antibiotic properties that help to inhibit bacteria’s ability to latch on to your bladder’s wall. While many doctors recommend cranberry juice I’ve found that cranberry in pill form is far more effective, often working just as quickly as prescribed antibiotics. Because of its natural properties, cranberry extract cleanses the bladder while strengthening its natural ability to combat infection, therefore providing long-term treatment for your urinary tract. 400mg twice a day is the usual recommended dosage. It is also a good idea to take Vitamin C in combination with Cranberry extract. Vitamin C is also a natural cleanser for the bladder, with its acidic properties helping to kill bacteria. Having found this alternative to treat my UTIs, I am now rarely inflicted by them and when I am, the symptoms are far less agonizing, disappearing within a day of natural treatment.

Don’t rush into taking antibiotics to treat your UTI. Although UTIs should be brought to your doctor’s attention, it is important to be aware of treatment alternatives that may be more beneficial to your health and your long-term treatment outcome.
